Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (MSC)
Conducted by: Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (MSC) — Te Kaunihera Pūtaiao Hauora
Submit your application to the MSC via the online portal. Include all qualification documents, transcripts, and references.
MSC reviews your qualifications against NZ standards. This takes up to 12 weeks on a case-by-case basis.
If equivalent: Direct registration. If not: Offered the online examination as a pathway.
Apply for your Annual Practising Certificate (APC) — the legal requirement to work in New Zealand labs.
Must hold a relevant qualification in MLS. A BS Medical Technology from the Philippines is assessed case-by-case.
Appropriate clinical lab experience strengthens your equivalency assessment by the MSC.
MSC requires a declaration of fitness to practice, including police clearances and health declarations.
The exam is only offered to those assessed as not "substantially equivalent." Direct registration is possible.
The online examination runs four times per year. You are offered a sitting after your assessment outcome is confirmed.
The pass mark is determined by the MSC per sitting. Specific scoring methodology is provided directly to eligible candidates.
Covers Chemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, Transfusion, and Histology relevant to the NZ scope of practice.
Registration alone isn't enough to work. You must apply for an annual APC to legally practice in NZ.
The NZ pathway is a registration process, not just an exam. Your success depends on the MSC's individual assessment of your degree and experience.
Helping others who dream of becoming NZ MedTechs, Rachelle—now a Provisional Medical Laboratory Scientist in New Zealand—vlogs about her beginnings and her life in NZ now. We are so blessed to have been part of her NZ story and how the Lord answered her prayer.
If you're planning to apply for NZMLS in the future, you can start with our PCE review—used by many for their international medtech goals as we continue to improve our support for NZ-specific pathways.
TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY!
Consolidated answers based on official MSC NZ documentation. Always verify specific requirements at mscouncil.org.nz before initiating your application.
The examination is not automatic—it is contingent upon the MSC’s assessment of your qualifications. You are only required to sit the online examination if your application review determines your qualification is not substantially equivalent to the required New Zealand standard.
If the Council deems your qualification equivalent, you may be granted registration directly. For many international graduates, the assessment is performed on a case-by-case basis, considering both academic and clinical backgrounds.

This allows candidates to sit the exam from any suitable global location, provided they meet strict technical and environmental requirements. You are monitored in real-time via webcam throughout the session.
The format consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to be completed within a 3-hour window. The examination is administered strictly in English.
Source: MSC Online Examinations Candidate Handbook (May 2025)The passing standard is typically 75% in both the generic and discipline-specific sections independently. Failing one section results in an overall failure of the examination, regardless of the score in the other section.
Results are communicated by the Council via email following the official scoring period. The examination is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.

Pathway 2 allows candidates to demonstrate proficiency if English was the sole language of instruction and assessment at their university. Many Philippine institutions qualify under this pathway, but formal evidence from the institution is required.
